The Justice Project - HOME

The TJP Newsletter has arrived

Issue 1 is here.

We hope you will take a few moments to read it and ponder some of the issues it raises.  You can also catch up on some of our news - like our office in the 'new' Melbourne Justice Museum aka the 'old' City Watch House in Russell Street Melbourne.

After our Community Forum in October last year many people asked: 'What can I do?  How can I do something about the direction our country is taking?'  There are some ideas in the newsletter...  See if you 'fit the profile'...

You may have heard there will be a federal election this year.  Have you ever wondered what your local candidates think about basic Human Rights?  Have they ever wondered?  Do they have personal views or only party views?  About what?  David Hicks?  Off-shore processing?  Anti-terrorist legislation?  Fair trials?

You will find opportunities to: campaign, engage, educate, research, write, link, create and financially support.

We welcome any feedback and submissions for 'You and Me @ TJP' and look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

The TJP Editorial Committee

The Justice Project was formed in 2004. Its first project was to campaign for refugee policy reform and to campaign for the restoration of human rights in Australia. Its members include Julian Burnside QC, the Right Honourable Malcolm Fraser, Associate Professor Robert Manne and Hugh Evans (Young Australian of the Year 2004).

Following The Justice Project's campaign in the 2004 Federal election, we decided to continue our campaign against mandatory detention, but also, over 2005, to focus specifically on Victoria's decision to consider a Charter or Bill of Rights. We thoroughly support the initiative of the Australian Capital Territory in enacting a Human Rights Act, and welcome the new Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities. We believe the momentum should be continued to all Australian States and Territories.

"Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities " (Vic.)

"ACT Human Rights Act" (ACT)

"No Human Rights Act" yet (rest of Aust.)

Victoria is the first State to enact a Charter of Rights. Following a consultative process legislation was produced which is similar to the legislation enacted in the ACT.

We believe that if all the States followed this lead, the adoption of a Commonwealth Charter or Bill of Rights would follow.

We want a fair go for all.

We Will Be Remembered is a journey of discovery through Australia's policy regarding refugees. It strips back the policy, law and politics, revealing this problem for what it is: human.

TJP Board members discuss contemporary issues, including the recent Migration Act Amendments Bill on TV.
Online video is available here.

THANK YOU!

State of Rights

Congratulations Victoria!
The Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act became law on 25th July 2006.

More information on the State of Rights campaign, and human rights in general can be found here.

Australia is the only Western Country in the world without a Charter of Human Rights.

Victoria and the ACT now have human rights laws, following community consultation.

The rest of Australia and most notably the Commonwealth Government lags behind.

In this section of our website we have gathered an array of material to inform you about human rights in Victoria, Australia and internationally. You will also find material containing the principal arguments for a Charter. You can also email in questions and comments and learn about upcoming events.

What about Australia?

The Justice Project endorses the campaign launched by New Matilda in October 2005. A draft Charter of Human Rights for Australia was launched by the Rt. Hon. Malcolm Fraser (Former PM) in Sydney. More information here.
