| From 1st January 2007, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission assumes new responsibilities under the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities. The Commission’s role with respect to the Charter is to: •ensure Victorians understand their human rights protections •provide an independent assessment of how well State and local governments comply with the Charter •report to the Government about the operation of the Charter in relation to new legislation and the Courts •look at particular human rights issues and concerns at the request of the Attorney-General •review policies and practices for compliance with the Charter at the request of public authorities |
