Human Rights Candidates’ Community Forums PDF Print E-mail

In the lead up to the 2007 federal election, The Justice Project is working to encourage and support community groups to conduct Human Rights Forums.

The aim of the 2007 TJP campaign is:

  • To create a greater community understanding and awareness of human rights in Australia
  • To help inform and educate political candidates from all parties about human rights
  • To encourage Australians to vote for politicians and/or parties committed to the protection of human rights.

In the lead-up to the 2007 federal election, instead of publishing our regular Newsletter, we decided to produce a 2007 Campaign Kit. The kit is designed to help you and your community to plan and successfully run a Human Rights Forum within your own federal seat. You can view the Forum Kit here

TJP intends that with proper support, these forums can be conducted in every federal seat across the Commonwealth.

A number have already taken place in Victoria, and planning is well under way for others around the country.

Through the forums we are committed to fostering and facilitating genuineand well-resourced public debate on human rights. Our aim is to be educative and not confrontational. The suggested format includes:

  • a keynote speaker with expertise and passion about human rights in Australia,
  • the opportunity for all candidates who are contesting a Federal seat to speak about how he or she will protect human rights, if elected.
  • the opportunity for questions from the audience.

The Forum Kit is designed to be a step-by-step guide on how you and your local community organisation can join with others to plan, and then to stage, your own Human Rights Forum. TJP will assist you in every way we can, however it is your community’s Human Rights Forum. The kit is the first and most important instalment of the on-going practical support TJP will be providing to help you run your own Human Rights forum.

We look forward to you and your community’s active and energetic participation.

This is a vitally important opportunity to return to Canberra, politicians who are aware that there is a mood in their constituency for a return to an Australia that is safe, secure and fair to all and welcoming to those in genuine need.
